Marcus Golden was shot and killed by St. Paul police on January 14th, 2015.

Marcus had a previous bad interaction with the St. Paul Police and was considering reaching out to an attorney to pursue a lawsuit. On the night of his death, officers Jeremy Doverspike and Dan Peck responded to a call without following proper procedures like activating their lights or sirens or even notifying dispatch.

Marcus was parked outside the apartment building of an ex-girlfriend trying to return some property when they arrived. Marcus tried to drive away to avoid them, leaving behind tire tracks in the snow that show how he nearly slid down a hill trying to drive AROUND the officers and leave. The officers chased Marcus’s vehicle on foot and fired shots as he drove away. They fired from over 100 feet away, and struck Marcus in the back of the head and in the arm.

Evidence from the scene—including tire tracks and footprints in the snow—clearly revealed Marcus was trying to avoid harm, not cause it. On top of that, the officers claimed they “feared for their lives” and were never held accountable.
