Paul Castaway

Paul Castaway was shot and killed by Denver police on July 12th, 2015.

Paul was a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and struggled with schizophrenia. On the day he was killed, his mother, Lynn, reluctantly called 911 seeking medical help during one of Paul’s schizophrenic episodes. Instead, the police came and chased him into a trailer park and down a dead-end road.

Paul was cornered and held a knife to his own neck, not threatening anyone but himself, and the police responded by shooting him 3 times.

Paul's dying words were, “What’s wrong with you guys?”

Despite the witnesses including his mother telling the police he was not a threat, they claimed they feared for their lives. The Denver Police Department conducted an internal investigation and found no officer guilty of any wrongdoing. Just like that, Paul became another name added to the long list of those failed by a system that wasn’t built to protect them.

Paul’s family refuses to let his story be forgotten. His brother Gabriel and sister-in-law Tonia created the foundation “Remember My Name” in his honor, supporting Native families and others facing similar tragedies.
